8221.jpg (609942 bytes)A dry run of the pattern before we begin cementing things down-Note-laying the bricks on edge turned out badly-lay the bricks on the flat sides for the walls on use #1 arched bricks for the ceiling-see later images of how this works 8223.jpg (637790 bytes)Precariously balanced, Doug attempts to do this correctly 8224.jpg (615584 bytes)Doug's feet
825.jpg (635857 bytes)The firebox floor/cooking surface is down 826.jpg (628934 bytes)Bill cleans off the excess mortar 828.jpg (625813 bytes)Bill does that some more
829.jpg (630578 bytes)Bill admires our work 830.jpg (611692 bytes)The basic firebox is in. We'll add the entry arch and the firebox arch next, as we bring the front and back walls up with the arches 831.jpg (596097 bytes)Looking down from the upper deck
8251.jpg (619597 bytes)Forms in for the vaulted arch 8252.jpg (622120 bytes)Oh look - a sort of staging to stand on while working 8253.jpg (609992 bytes)A view from the ground, looking at the back of the oven
8254.jpg (625442 bytes)View looking into the front of the oven as we add forms to build the arched vault 8255.jpg (615324 bytes)We've added 2x6 bridging between the forms so as to have something to attach the thin plywood to before laying in the firebrick ceiling of the vault 8256.jpg (604122 bytes)A view from above, looking into the firebox
8257.jpg (605039 bytes)Once the refractory mortar has cured we'll begin with small fires and burn out the wooden forms that are shown here 8258.jpg (616934 bytes)Here you can see the plywood installed over the forms to give a good surface to build the vaulted arch 8259.jpg (612712 bytes)Close-up of the form
82510.jpg (626503 bytes)The bricks are in on both sides and we only have one row left down the center of the roof 82511.jpg (637142 bytes)This is gonna be soooo neat! 82512.jpg (618829 bytes)From the lake side
82513.jpg (616619 bytes)Looking down from the upper deck we can see where the outflow of hot gasses will exit the firebox in front (towards the bottom of the screen) 82514.jpg (609726 bytes)Closer look at that 82515.jpg (608830 bytes)Another view of the roof of the oven
82516.jpg (639266 bytes)Doug slaving away 82517.jpg (624410 bytes)Golly, maybe staging on this side would have been a good idea too? 82518.jpg (605171 bytes)Note the mortar on the hands-caution - may cause skin irritation. bah...
82519.jpg (617839 bytes)Closing up the front of the firebox 82520.jpg (619183 bytes)Firebox is nearly done. We'll work on the smoke path and entry arch next time 8311.jpg (603213 bytes)This may end up as the entry arch
8312.jpg (636051 bytes)The smoke exits the top of the firebox at the front of the oven (to the viewer's right in this image), and passes through the horizontal passage on the top of the oven to the flue shown at the left in clay tile. As the fire burns deep inside the oven the smoke must travel to the front of the oven to exit the flue. It gives the heat from combustion off to the firebrick oven by taking this circuitous path to the chimney. (Note-the clay tile was temporary-it couldn't stand the heat and crumbled-use firebricks for the chimney!) 8313.jpg (642215 bytes)This front-on view of the oven shows the flue from a different angle. Again- the wooden forms you can see inside will be burnt out as the initial firing begins to cure the firebrick joints 8314.jpg (630010 bytes)Here you can see some reinforcing wire that we'll embed into the outer surface of the oven - a little insurance against arch failure in case a mortar joint fails
8315.jpg (609577 bytes)The mortar embedding the wire 8316.jpg (624777 bytes)View from center-deck 8317.jpg (599354 bytes)Closer look at it
8318.jpg (612840 bytes)From the side We burned a couple of sheets of news paper and the smoke came out in the right place. Good news on top of good news here Click here for images of the next phase of construction - the outer shell
